Kavaguti and Smirnov teamed up in spring 2006. Kavaguti competed internationally in singles for Japan before switching to pair skating. With former partner Alexander Markuntsov, she became the first pair skater from Japan to medal at an ISU Championship (silver at 2001 Junior Worlds). After her partnership with Markuntsov dissolved in 2003, she skated with different partners and competed with Devin Patrick at the U.S. Championships. Kavaguti has been living and training in Russia since 2003 and received Russian citizenship in February 2009. Her name spelling was changed from Kawaguchi to Kavaguti. The couple has landed the quadruple throw Salchow in competition and became the first pair to perform a throw quadruple loop in competition (2015 Cup of China, but two-footed). Kavaguti graduated from St. Petersburg University in 2007 with a degree in International Relations. Smirnov got married to Ekaterina Garus in August 2010. Their son Fedor was born in October 2014. Kavaguti/Smirnov missed the 2013/14 season as he ruptured ligaments in his knee in October 2013 and had surgery. They had missed the 2012 European Championships as he recovered from appendix surgery.
